Choosing Engineered Hardwood for a Concrete Slab
Concrete slabs are common in Southern California homes, and on a ground floor engineered hardwood is the usual choice there: a real-wood wear layer over a layered core that moves less than solid wood when humidity changes, so it can be glued down or floated over concrete. Glamour Flooring, a licensed flooring contractor (CSLB #1005283), tests the slab for moisture before we quote.
- Wear layer. The real-wood top layer decides whether the floor can be sanded and refinished later, and how many times. Our European white oak comes in 2mm, 4mm and 6mm options.
- Construction. Look for a core the manufacturer approves for glue-down or floating over concrete. Each product page lists the manufacturer’s construction details and install methods.
- Plank width. Wide planks, 7.5″ to 13″ in European white oak, are usually engineered, because a wide solid board moves more with humidity.
- Installation method. On a slab, glue-down or floating after a moisture test; over a raised wood subfloor, nail-down or glue-down.
- Species and finish. Oak, including European white oak, plus hickory, maple and walnut, in natural, wire-brushed and custom-stained finishes.

What is the best engineered hardwood for a concrete slab?
One the manufacturer approves for glue-down or floating installation over concrete, with a wear layer thick enough for the refinishing you want later. We test the slab for moisture and check that it is flat before we install.
How thick should the wear layer be?
A thicker wear layer leaves more room to sand and refinish later. Our European white oak comes in 2mm, 4mm and 6mm options; we can show you each one at the showroom.
Is engineered hardwood real wood?
Yes. The top layer is real hardwood over a layered core, so it looks and feels like a solid wood floor and comes in the same species, such as oak, hickory, maple and walnut.
