Glamour Flooring bathroom remodel with a floating black vanity, round brass mirror and marble hexagon mosaic floor

Small pieces, big effect

Why Marble Mosaics

Marble is quarried, not printed, so no two sheets match exactly. The veining wanders across the small pieces and the tone shifts slightly from tile to tile, so even an all-white or all-grey wall has depth.

Size is the other advantage. Mosaic pieces are mounted on mesh sheets, so they bend around curves, wrap into shower niches and fill narrow strips that a large tile would have to be cut down for.

Shapes and Patterns

White Carrara marble 2-inch hexagon mosaic, matte

Hexagon

The honeycomb reads as classic and quiet. Small hexagons are a favorite for shower and bathroom floors.

Picket

Long, pointed pieces that interlock in a soft zigzag. A fresh take on a backsplash or a shower wall.

Herringbone

Short rectangles set at an angle. It adds movement to a backsplash, a niche or a floor border.

White marble basketweave mosaic with black marble dots

Basketweave

Paired rectangles around a small accent square. Traditional, and handsome on bathroom floors.

Elongated subway

Slim rectangles in a straight or offset lay. Clean and modern on walls and backsplashes.

Penny round

Small circles with plenty of grout lines. Playful on a floor, with good grip underfoot.

Finish

Honed or Polished?

Honed marble is ground to a soft, matte face. It feels calmer, gives better grip underfoot and hides fine scratches and etching, so it is the usual choice for floors and shower pans.

Polished marble is buffed to a gloss that deepens the color and makes the veining stand out. It looks its best on walls, backsplashes and fireplace surrounds, where nobody walks on it.

Placement

Where to Use Them

  • Kitchen backsplash. A strip of mosaic between counter and cabinets is the easiest way to bring marble into a kitchen. Planning new counters too? See kitchen countertop installation or our marble countertops.
  • Shower floors and niches. Small tiles mean more grout lines, and more grout lines mean better footing on a wet floor.
  • Bathroom accent walls. One wall of mosaic behind a vanity or tub can carry the whole room.
  • Fireplace surrounds. See our fireplace tile installation work.
  • Entry insets and borders. A mosaic rug or border inside a larger stone or tile floor.

Caring for Marble

Marble is calcium-based, so acids react with it. Lemon juice, vinegar and many bathroom cleaners can leave dull etch marks, especially on polished pieces. Seal the stone and the grout after installation, reseal as needed, and clean with a pH-neutral cleaner made for natural stone. Wipe spills from wine, coffee and citrus quickly.

Good questions

Marble Mosaic Questions

Are marble mosaics OK on a shower floor?

Yes. Small mosaic pieces create many grout lines, which gives better footing on a wet floor, and honed marble adds grip. The shower needs a proper waterproofing system underneath, and the marble and grout should be sealed.

Honed or polished marble: which should I choose?

Choose honed for floors and shower pans: it is matte, gives better grip and hides fine scratches. Choose polished for walls, backsplashes and fireplace surrounds, where the gloss brings out the color and veining.

Do marble mosaics need sealing?

Yes. Seal the marble and the grout after installation and reseal as needed. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, because acidic cleaners, vinegar and lemon can etch marble.

Can marble mosaics be used on a fireplace surround?

Yes. Polished or honed marble mosaics work well on a fireplace surround, where they are not walked on. See our fireplace tile installation page.
