Carpet is still the softest and quietest floor you can put in a bedroom, a playroom or an upstairs hallway. This page is about the carpet itself: the fibers, the styles and how to choose one for each room. When you are ready for the install, our carpet installation page explains how we measure, take out the old carpet and install the new one.

What it’s made of

Carpet Fibers Compared

Nylon

The most resilient of the common fibers. It springs back after foot traffic and furniture, so it suits stairs, hallways, family rooms and homes with pets or children. Choose one with a stain-protection treatment.

Polyester

Soft to the touch and available in rich colors, usually at a lower cost than nylon. A good fit for bedrooms and guest rooms with normal traffic.

Olefin (polypropylene)

Resists fading and moisture and can be cleaned with stronger cleaners, which makes it useful in sunny rooms and in loop-style carpet. It crushes more easily than nylon in busy areas.

Wool

A natural fiber with a rich look and feel. It resists soil and wears well with care, but it is not naturally stain resistant and usually costs more than synthetic fibers.

Carpet Pad, Density and Twist

Two carpets with the same fiber can feel and wear very differently. Density is how tightly the yarn is packed: press your fingers into the pile, and the less backing you can feel, the denser it is. Twist is how many turns each strand has; tighter twist holds its shape longer in busy rooms. Face weight tells you how much yarn sits on top, but a heavy carpet with loose, tall yarn can still mat down. Underneath, the pad matters as much as the carpet. As a general guide, many carpet makers call for a firm, dense pad no thicker than about 7/16″ in most rooms, and a thinner, firmer pad on stairs and in busy areas. Always check the pad requirements for the carpet line you choose.

How it looks and feels

Carpet Styles: Cut Pile, Loop and Pattern

Plush and Saxony

Plush and Saxony cut pile have a smooth, even surface that feels soft underfoot. They suit bedrooms and formal rooms, but footprints and vacuum marks show more.

Textured and frieze

Textured and frieze cut pile use twisted yarns that hide footprints and everyday wear, which makes them a practical choice for family rooms.

Berber and level loop

Berber and level loop carpets are durable and low-profile. Pet claws can snag loops, so pet owners usually do better with cut pile.

Cut-and-loop

Cut-and-loop patterns combine both for texture and pattern, and they help hide everyday soil.

Room by room

Choosing Carpet for Each Room

Bedrooms can take a softer plush or polyester. Stairs and hallways need a dense, resilient carpet, usually nylon. Family rooms do well with a textured cut pile that hides traffic. Many Los Angeles homes pair carpet in the bedrooms with hardwood, laminate or waterproof vinyl in the living areas, kitchens and baths. Carpet is warmer and quieter than a hard floor and usually costs less per room, while hard floors are easier to keep clean around pets and spills.

Carpet for Stairs

Stairs take more wear than any room, because every step lands on the same edge. A dense nylon with a low pile or a tight loop holds up best and keeps its look on the nose of each step. The carpet is wrapped over the nose and secured under it, so a thinner, firm pad gives a crisp edge and a safer footing; very tall plush can look rounded and feel less sure underfoot. If you are weighing a different look, compare hardwood stairs with carpeted ones before you decide.

Good questions

Carpet Questions

What carpet fiber is best for pets and kids?

Nylon is usually the safest choice. It springs back after traffic and, with a stain-protection treatment, handles spills well. Pick a cut pile rather than a loop, because pet claws can catch and pull loops. A textured cut pile also hides paw prints and everyday wear better than a smooth plush.

What carpet works best on stairs?

A dense nylon with a low pile or a tight loop. It keeps its shape on the edge of each step, where wear is heaviest. Pair it with a thinner, firm pad so the carpet wraps the stair nose cleanly and feels secure underfoot. Very tall, soft plush tends to look rounded on stairs.

Can I just buy carpet material from you?

Yes. We sell carpet and pad as material only, so you can use your own installer or do the work yourself. Delivery available, charged separately based on job site location and project size. We will help you work out how much carpet and pad your rooms need. If you would rather have our crews handle it, mention that when you book your estimate.

Do you install carpet I bought somewhere else?

Yes. We also take install-only jobs, so you can bring carpet you already bought and have us put it in as your licensed flooring contractor. We measure the rooms, check the subfloor and confirm the pad before we schedule. The details are on our install-only jobs page.

Can I see carpet before I buy?

Yes. Call ahead and we’ll check whether we have a matching sample at our Woodland Hills showroom. Booking a free in-home estimate? We’ll bring samples to your home. Seeing a sample in your own light, next to your walls and furniture, is the best way to judge color and texture.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. 12 Month Interest Free Financing *On Approved Credit*. Ask about it at the showroom or during your free in-home estimate, or call (818) 963-0878 for details.

Is carpet removal included?

It depends on the offer running when you book. When we have a carpet removal offer, it appears in the banner at the top of this page. Otherwise, ask about removing your old carpet and pad during your free in-home estimate.
