Woodland Hills has two very different kinds of houses: postwar ranch homes in the flats north of the 101, and larger homes on irregular hillside lots south of Ventura Boulevard. In a ranch house, an addition or converted garage can sit on a different subfloor than the original rooms, so we check heights before recommending engineered or solid planks. Types of Hardwood Floors
Wide plank and European white oak—Wider boards mean fewer seams across a room, so the grain reads as one calm surface, from smooth natural looks to wire-brushed and distressed. Wide planks are usually engineered, because a layered core holds its shape better than a solid board of the same width. See wide plank European white oak, 7.5″ to 13″. Our European white oak comes in 2, 4 and 6 mm wear layers, and we carry it or can get it quickly. A thicker wear layer can be sanded more times over the life of the floor. Finishes include natural, wire-brushed and custom-stained.
Reclaimed hardwood—Reclaimed hardwood is available by special order. Ask about it during your free in-home estimate and we’ll go over what’s possible for your project.
Solid wood floors—Solid hardwood is one piece of wood from top to bottom, and it’s nailed or stapled down over a wood subfloor. Oak stains well and suits almost any style; walnut gives a room a warmer, darker look. We also carry ash, maple and cherry, so the choice mostly comes down to species and color. Solid oak is available from Somerset and Reward.
Engineered hardwood floors—Engineered hardwood has a real-wood top layer over a core of wood plies, pressed together under heat and pressure. It comes in as many species and colors as solid hardwood, and it’s the usual choice over concrete. Browse engineered hardwood flooring.
Herringbone and chevron—Herringbone boards are cut square and meet at a right angle, so the ends form a staggered zigzag. Chevron boards are cut at an angle, so the ends meet in a clean point, like a row of arrows. Both take more layout time and more material than straight planks, which is why a pattern floor is planned and quoted room by room. We carry pattern floors in European white oak, including Bergamo herringbone and chevron and RIVA Spain herringbone.

Solid vs. Engineered Hardwood Floors
Solid hardwood is one piece of wood throughout. It’s normally nailed or stapled to a wood subfloor, so it isn’t glued straight onto a concrete slab. Engineered hardwood has a real-wood top layer over a layered core, which makes it more stable when humidity changes. Most engineered floors can be glued down or floated over concrete, as long as the slab passes a moisture test and is flat within the manufacturer’s limits.
Concrete slabs are common in Southern California homes, so on a ground floor engineered hardwood is often the right fit. Over a raised wood subfloor, either solid or engineered can work. Which hardwood species is the hardest?
Of the species we carry, hickory is the hardest, at about 1,820 on the Janka scale, followed by maple at about 1,450 and white oak at about 1,360. Walnut is softer, at about 1,010, and dents more easily. The finish matters too: a matte or wire-brushed surface hides everyday scratches better than a high gloss.
Do you carry French oak flooring?
Yes. We carry French oak from California Classics, including the Mediterranean collection, alongside European white oak from several brands. Compare them side by side at our showroom at 21030 Victory Blvd, Woodland Hills.
What is the difference between herringbone and chevron?
Herringbone boards are cut square and meet at a right angle, making a staggered zigzag. Chevron boards are cut at an angle, so the ends meet in a straight point. We carry both patterns in European white oak, including Bergamo herringbone and chevron.
