Why Subfloor Preparation Matters

Once the old flooring came up, we assessed the existing plywood subfloor. As the photos show, it had old adhesive residue, fastener holes and seams between sheets — normal for an older floor, but not something you want directly under new hardwood.

We cleaned the surface and poured self-leveling material in the areas that needed it to create a flatter, more consistent base. Proper preparation helps the planks sit evenly, reduces the chance of hollow spots or movement underfoot, and gives the finished floor a cleaner look. It is one of the least visible parts of a hardwood floor installation, and one of the most important.

With the subfloor ready, our installers set the engineered planks in flooring adhesive, using painter’s tape to keep the boards snug while the adhesive set. Long boards and staggered end joints give the room a calm, open look, and the new floor finishes cleanly at the doorway where it meets the existing hallway flooring.
