Photos online are great for narrowing down a style, but they rarely show how a floor really looks. Screens shift colors, and a small sample chip can’t tell you how a whole room of planks will feel underfoot. That’s what a hardwood flooring showroom is for: it’s where you rule hardwood flooring options in or out with your own eyes and hands. This checklist covers what to compare once you’re standing in front of the boards, from construction and wear layer to finish, stairs and what’s actually included in your quote.

Before you go, in one minute

A little prep makes the visit faster. Our plan your showroom visit list covers what to bring, like room photos, rough measurements and whether you’re on a concrete slab or a wood subfloor. Then come ready to compare.

8 Things to Compare

1. Several boards, not one chip

A small sample shows one slice of one board. Real floors vary from plank to plank in color, grain and knots, and character-grade floors vary more than cleaner grades. Ask whether we have the matching boards or a display panel, and look at several boards together. If you can, lay three or four side by side on the floor and step back. That’s much closer to what you’ll see in your room, and it’s the quickest way to tell whether the variation feels lively or busy to you.

2. Light

The same floor can look warm under showroom lights and cooler next to a window. Look at your favorites near natural light and again under the overhead lights. If you can, bring a cabinet door, a paint swatch or a piece of your countertop and hold it right against the boards. A floor that looks perfect on its own can clash with a cabinet color, and it’s much easier to find that out now than after installation.

3. Construction: engineered or solid

Ask whether each floor is engineered or solid, and which one fits your subfloor. Engineered hardwood has a real wood wear layer over a cross-layered core. On a concrete slab, it’s usually the choice, typically glued down. Solid hardwood is nailed down, so it needs a raised wood subfloor. If you’re not sure what’s under your current floor, we can check during an estimate. Here’s more about how our hardwood floor installation handles slab and wood subfloors.

4. Wear layer and thickness

Ask for the spec sheet and find the wear layer, the real wood on top of an engineered board. It’s one of the biggest differences between floors that look alike on a display. For example, Hennessy Signature Highland has a 2 mm wear layer, while Urban Floor Villa Caprisi Brindisi has 4 mm. A thicker wear layer leaves more wood for sanding and refinishing down the road, so it’s worth asking about if you plan to keep the floor for many years. Note the overall thickness too, since it affects how the floor meets the rooms next to it.

Our guide to choosing wide-plank hardwood explains wear layers in more detail.

5. Width and board length

Wide planks make a room feel calmer, with fewer seams, but board length matters just as much. Longer boards mean fewer end joints. Monarch Plank Vinland White Oak Select, for example, comes in lengths from 24″ up to 94.5″. Walk along a few displays and notice how the end joints change the look. If you love very wide boards, our European white oak runs from 7.5″ to 13″ wide.

6. Finish and texture

Touch the boards. A wire-brushed surface, like Brindisi’s, has a subtle texture that brings out the grain, while a smooth board feels sleek. Then compare sheen. Vinland’s ultra-matte finish reads soft and natural, and glossier finishes reflect more light. In everyday life, matte finishes and textured surfaces help hide wear and dust better than high gloss, which is worth weighing if you have kids, pets or a busy entry. No hardwood is scratch-proof, but the right finish makes a floor more forgiving.

7. Stairs and transitions

If your project includes stairs, ask whether there’s a matching stair nose and treads for the floor you like, so the stairs and floors read as one design. Also ask how the new floor will meet tile, carpet or another room at doorways, and which transition pieces will be used. These details are easy to overlook in a showroom and very noticeable at home. See how we handle hardwood stair installation.

8. Material only or installed

Ask exactly what’s included. Some homeowners buy material only and use their own installer; others want one team for the whole job. If you’re comparing quotes, check whether each one includes removal of the old floor, subfloor prep, moisture testing, installation and trim. Our showroom page explains both options under Buy Material Only or Have Us Install It. Delivery available, charged separately based on job site location and project size.
