The home was in the middle of its renovation when we installed the hardwood: new doors were going in, appliances were still in their boxes and the walls were protected with plastic. Putting the floor down before the baseboards lets the trim cover the expansion gap at the walls for a clean finished edge.

Installation Details

The same 7-1/2-inch planks continue from the entry through the hallway and into each bedroom, so the floor reads as one continuous surface. Along the walls, spacers hold the expansion gap that hardwood needs to move with seasonal changes; the baseboards cover that gap once they are installed. Random plank lengths and staggered end joints keep the pattern natural.

Wire brushing gently opens the oak’s grain to create a subtle texture you can feel underfoot. That texture, together with natural knots and color variation from plank to plank, helps everyday scuffs and dust blend in better than on a perfectly smooth floor.
