Six engineered hardwood collections, compared on what’s actually published.

Urban Floor is a Southern California flooring maker whose hardwood line is built around engineered European oak. Glamour Flooring carries Urban Floor, and you can browse every Urban Floor color we list on our brand page. This guide is different: it explains how the hardwood collections differ in construction, finish, wear layer and warranty, so you can narrow down to the right one before you compare colors.

The short answer:

  • Villa Caprisi: wide 9.5″ European oak with a 4 mm wear layer and a lacquered finish. A good all-round choice for long, open rooms.
  • Timbertop: reactive-stained European oak with a 6 mm wear layer (on most formats) and herringbone, chevron and extra-wide options.
  • L’artiste by Timbertop: a Timbertop-built collection of artist-inspired colors, 6 mm wear layer, and the longest finish warranty in the lineup.
  • Prima Lusso: clean, prime-grade oak with very little knotting.
  • Chêne: a 7.5″ European oak with a 2 mm wear layer.
  • Urban Lifestyle: narrower hickory, birch and walnut options, plus a 7.5″ European oak with an HDF core.

A quick look at the brand

According to Urban Floor’s own company history, the company was incorporated in 2003 and is based in Southern California. Its mission statement describes it as an engineered wood flooring manufacturer serving distributors and retailers. A few milestones from that timeline help explain the collections you’ll see today:

  • 2011: Villa Caprisi debuts at Surfaces, described by Urban Floor as European white oak in wide, long planks.
  • 2017: Urban Floor partners with European manufacturer Timbertop on the premium Timbertop series.
  • 2018: L’artiste launches, a European oak collection with reactive-stained colors named after French artists.
  • 2024: Prima Lusso is introduced, made only from prime-grade oak.
  • 2025: Urban Floor reports that Timbertop won “Best of Wood” at The International Surface Event (TISE) 2025.

How the planks are built

Every Urban Floor collection in this guide is engineered hardwood: a real wood top layer (the wear layer) glued to a layered core. The cores differ by collection, according to the manufacturer’s product pages:

  • Villa Caprisi, Chêne and Urban Lifestyle’s hickory, birch and walnut: “Multi-Ply Cross Grain Core.” Urban Lifestyle’s Elephant lists “Engineered with HDF Core and Poplar Back Layer.”
  • Timbertop and L’artiste: “Cross-Finger Core.” The Timbertop page describes a three-layer engineered design with a core of Hevea wood.
  • Prima Lusso: “8 Cross-ply Engineered, Birch, Poplar & Eucalyptus Mix.”

Why it matters: layered, cross-oriented cores are what make engineered floors more dimensionally stable than solid boards. That’s also why many engineered floors can be glued over concrete slabs or floated. Installation methods vary by product (see the table), and the manufacturer’s warranty requires its installation and maintenance guidelines to be followed. For the installation side, see how we install engineered hardwood floors.

Finishes: reactive stains, smoked oak, Bona UV and lacquer

The collections use a few different finishing approaches, and they shape both the look and the upkeep:

  • Reactive staining (Timbertop, L’artiste): The brand explains that reactive stains interact with the wood’s tannins and cellulose to mimic natural aging, a process it says takes weeks and produces color variation you can’t get from ordinary stains. Expect more board-to-board variation.
  • Smoked finishes: several colors are smoked. On its Brindisi page, the brand says the smoked finish “penetrates deep into the wood” for a color that top-staining can’t duplicate.
  • Bona® Natural UV Urethane (Timbertop, L’artiste, Prima Lusso): The brand describes it as a “virtually invisible” finish that keeps a natural, untreated look while protecting the surface.
  • Lacquered finish (Villa Caprisi, Chêne, Urban Lifestyle): listed on those product pages. The ones we checked (Brindisi, Avellino, Barbera, Hickory Cloud 9, Elephant) also list a wirebrushed texture and a matte gloss level.

Villa Caprisi

Villa Caprisi is the collection Urban Floor calls its “most prized” in its company history: 9.5″ European oak in long planks (Brindisi runs up to 87″), with a 4 mm wear layer and a lacquered, wirebrushed finish (Brindisi and Avellino list a matte gloss). Colors on our site include Brindisi, Avellino, Umbria and Romagna (listed as character-grade European oak, for more knots and movement).

If you like the look of wide plank European white oak, Villa Caprisi is usually the first Urban Floor collection to compare.

Timbertop

Timbertop is the collaboration with European maker Timbertop, and the brand reports it won a TISE 2025 “Best of” award. On the Timbertop page, the brand says the line now has double the wear layer (6 mm nominal) and double the thickness (13/16″ nominal) of its earlier specs. It comes in more formats than any other collection in the lineup:

  • 9.5″ planks: for example St. Moritz, Lucca and Savona.
  • 4-3/4″ herringbone: for example Lucca Herringbone and Vail Herringbone.
  • Chevron: Courchevel, 11.5″ in fixed 57″ lengths with a UV-oiled finish.
  • Extra-wide Signature: Signature St. Moritz and Signature Absolute, 15-3/4″ wide, plus Douglas Fir Prima, 13-1/2″ wide in Douglas fir.

L’artiste by Timbertop

L’artiste shares Timbertop’s construction (cross-finger core, 6 mm wear layer, Bona Natural UV finish), but its colors are reactive-stained and named after French painters. It carries a 50-year residential finish warranty, the longest of any collection in the lineup. Examples on our site: Bonnard (light and cool, with a gentle smoked finish, per Urban Floor), Chantereau and Degas (an 8.625″ plank). Urban Floor’s product pages list glue or nail/staple installation for L’artiste, not floating.

Prima Lusso

Prima Lusso is for homeowners who want a calm, clean floor. Urban Floor describes it as prime-grade oak, “virtually free of knots,” in 9.5″ planks with a 4 mm wear layer. On the Stella product page, Urban Floor lists a lifetime structural warranty alongside the 35-year finish warranty. See Stella and Zenith.

Chêne

Chêne (“oak” in French) is 7.5″ European oak, gently wirebrushed, in random lengths up to 86″, with a 2 mm wear layer. That’s a thinner wear layer than the collections above, which leaves less wood for sanding over the floor’s life (see below). Examples: Barbera and Syrah.

Urban Lifestyle

Urban Lifestyle is the place to look for species other than oak: Hickory Cloud 9 (American hickory) and Walnut White Mist (American walnut), both 5″ wide with a 3 mm wear layer. The collection also includes Elephant, a 7.5″ European oak built differently from the rest: Urban Floor lists an HDF core with a poplar back layer, a 1.2 mm wear layer and a 25-year finish warranty. A thin wear layer like that is generally treated as recoat-only, not something to sand later.

Quality, sustainability and warranty

These are the manufacturer’s own published statements, linked so you can read them in full:

  • FloorScore®: Urban Floor’s Safety & Sustainability page says it maintains an active FloorScore certification for its engineered hardwood. That’s an independent program that tests for indoor air quality (VOC) emissions. It publishes the certificate for Chêne, Prima Lusso, Urban Lifestyle and Villa Caprisi, and lists L’artiste and Timbertop as “upon request.”
  • Formaldehyde: Urban Floor states its products are CARB II (Phase 2) compliant. It also says products are randomly tested by third-party labs in the U.S. (Professional Testing Laboratory, Inc. in Dalton, GA, and Benchmark Holdings LLC in Eugene, OR), and it publishes those results.
  • Legal sourcing: Urban Floor states that all of its products are Lacey Act compliant. The Lacey Act is the U.S. law that bans trade in illegally harvested wood. Urban Floor also says it sources raw materials “from ecologically well-managed forests and suppliers” and uses environmentally safe adhesives between plies.
  • Warranty: Urban Floor’s warranty page lists a limited lifetime structural warranty and residential finish warranties by collection (35 years for Villa Caprisi, Timbertop, Chêne and Urban Lifestyle, though the Elephant product page lists 25; 50 years for L’artiste). Light-commercial coverage is listed separately (for example, 5-year finish and structural for Villa Caprisi and Timbertop). The warranty only applies to the original purchaser, requires indoor humidity of 35–55% and temperatures of 60–80°F year-round, and excludes scratches and dents (including from pet claws), water and moisture damage, and radiant heat installations above 85°F surface temperature. Read the full terms before you buy.

In plain terms: wear layer, finish and construction tell you more about how a floor will hold up than any label. Every real wood floor can scratch and dent, and no hardwood floor is waterproof.

How to choose the right collection

  1. Start with the look you want to live with. Reactive-stained and smoked colors (Timbertop, L’artiste and several Villa Caprisi colors) show more variation. Prima Lusso is the calmest. Character grade (Romagna) shows the most knots.
  2. Match the width to the room. 9.5″ planks suit most open rooms. The 15-3/4″ Signature boards make a statement in large spaces. 5″–7.5″ boards suit smaller rooms and traditional homes.
  3. Think about the floor’s lifespan. A thicker wear layer leaves more wood for future sanding. Under NWFA guidance, factory-finished engineered floors need at least about 2.5 mm of wear layer to be considered refinishable. That makes Timbertop’s and L’artiste’s 6 mm, and Villa Caprisi’s and Prima Lusso’s 4 mm, very different from Chêne’s 2 mm.
  4. Check your subfloor against the install types. Most collections list float, glue or nail/staple. L’artiste skips floating, and the Signature boards are listed as tongue & groove. Slab homes and second floors can lead to different choices.
  5. Plan stairs with the floor. Urban Floor lists matching molding profiles, including stair nose, on its product pages. To see what a matched staircase looks like, take a look at our hardwood stair project with Brindisi white oak.
  6. Ask about availability. Our listing a color doesn’t mean it’s in stock. Ask about availability before you settle on one.

Frequently asked questions

Is Urban Floor good quality?

It depends on the collection, so compare specs rather than the brand name. Urban Floor publishes wear layers up to 6 mm (Timbertop, L’artiste), finish warranties of 35–50 years by collection, FloorScore certification for its engineered hardwood, CARB II compliance and third-party test results. Wear layer, core and finish are the specs to compare.

What’s the difference between Villa Caprisi and Timbertop?

Both are wide European oak. Villa Caprisi lists a 5/8″ thickness, a 4 mm wear layer, a multi-ply cross-grain core and a lacquered finish. Timbertop lists 13/16″, a 6 mm wear layer (most formats), a cross-finger core, reactive stains and a Bona Natural UV finish, plus herringbone, chevron and extra-wide formats.

Is Urban Floor hardwood waterproof?

No. It’s real wood, and Urban Floor’s warranty excludes water and moisture damage. Wipe up spills quickly and avoid wet mopping.

Can I see Urban Floor before I decide?

Yes. We bring flooring samples to your home. You can also book a free in-home estimate or visit our showroom. Ask about availability for the colors you like.
