When a home has a curved staircase as its centerpiece, the floor and the stairs have to feel like one design. On this recent project in Santa Clarita, we installed wide plank European white oak floors and carried the same wood up a curved staircase with white railings, so the floors, landings and stairs all share one consistent finish.
Here’s a closer look at what we installed and why it works.

Wide planks that carry the room
For the floors, we installed 9.5″ wide engineered European white oak in random lengths from 1 to 7 feet. A plank that wide shows off more of the natural grain in every board, and in an open entry like this one it makes the space feel calm and uncluttered.
The random lengths matter just as much as the width. Mixing shorter and longer boards spreads the end joints across the floor instead of lining them up in a pattern, so the finished floor reads as natural wood rather than a repeating grid. The result is warm oak tones and natural grain that add character to the home without competing with the architecture.

If you’re weighing plank widths and lengths for your own home, our guide on how to choose wide-plank hardwood flooring walks through width, board length and wear layer in more detail.
Why engineered for a wide plank floor
Every plank in this home has a 4mm real wood wear layer, so what you see and walk on is genuine European white oak. Underneath, engineered hardwood is built in layers rather than cut from one solid piece of wood. That layered construction is a big reason engineered boards are a popular choice for wide planks: it helps a 9.5″ board stay stable while still giving you the look and feel of real oak on top.
Carrying the floor up the staircase
The staircase is where this project really comes together. Instead of letting the stairs feel like a separate element, we finished them to match the floor:
- Coordinating stair nosings at the edge of each step
- Hardwood planks across the steps
That combination connects the floors, the landings and every step of the curve with the same oak tone and finish. Against the white railings and spindles, the warm wood stands out and draws your eye up the staircase.

Why matching stair nosings matter
The nosing is the front edge of each step, and it is one of the first things you notice on a staircase. When the nosings coordinate with the floor, each step gets a clean, finished edge, and the transition from floor to stairs looks continuous instead of pieced together. On a curved staircase, where you see many steps at once, that consistency is what makes the whole stairway look like it was always part of the floor.
