The stone
Travertine is a natural stone in the limestone family, formed in layers where mineral-rich water left its deposits behind. That history shows on every tile: small pores and voids, soft banding and warm color movement that ranges from ivory and beige through walnut and noce browns to cool silver.
Because no two tiles are cut from the same spot, the shade and texture shift from piece to piece. Look at several tiles, or better a laid-out section, before you settle on a color. That variation is the reason people choose it over a printed look-alike.

Surface

The pores are filled and the face is ground smooth and matte. It is the easiest finish to clean and the most uniform look, a good fit for interior floors.

Tiles are tumbled until the edges round off and the surface softens. The result looks aged and relaxed, and it hides wear and small chips well.

Wire brushing opens up the texture for a slightly rugged, matte face that offers more grip than a honed tile.
Chiseled edges are chipped along the sides for a rustic, old-world look. Polished travertine is shinier and shows deeper color, but it gets slippery when wet, so it is mostly used indoors and on walls.

The classic layout
The Versailles pattern, also called French pattern, repeats a set of four sizes: squares and rectangles that interlock into a module with no long straight grout lines. The effect is calm from a distance and detailed up close, which is why it suits entries, great rooms and other large, open spaces.
It takes more planning than a single-size layout. The sizes come in set ratios, the module has to be started square to the room, and the edges need more cutting. Plan for a little extra material, and plan the layout before installation starts.
Where it goes
Inside, travertine works on living-area floors, bathrooms and in showers, as long as the shower is built over a proper waterproofing system; see our shower remodel work. It is also used around fireplaces (fireplace tile installation) and as a slab material for counters (kitchen countertops). Outside, thicker pavers suit patios and pool decks, where a tumbled or brushed face gives better footing.
Care is simple but specific. Seal it after installation and reseal as needed, clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, and avoid vinegar, lemon and other acidic cleaners, which can etch the surface. For smaller-format stone, browse marble mosaics.

Good questions
Filled and honed travertine has its pores filled and a smooth, matte face, so it looks cleaner and is easier to mop. Tumbled travertine has rounded edges and a softened, aged surface that hides wear. Honed suits modern interiors; tumbled suits rustic and old-world rooms.
A layout that repeats four tile sizes, squares and rectangles, in an interlocking module. It avoids long grout lines and works well in large rooms and entries. It needs more planning and cutting than a single-size floor, so plan for a little extra material.
Yes. Outdoors, thicker travertine pavers are a common choice for patios and pool decks. A tumbled or brushed surface gives better footing when wet than a polished one. Seal it, and use cleaners made for natural stone.
Yes. Seal it after installation and reseal as needed, depending on traffic and finish. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner; acidic products such as vinegar or lemon can etch the surface.
